Pronouncing Parallel Bible

Some monumental, and some unimportant - and things mostly forgotten happened in the world in 1890. For example,  The Sleeping Beauty, featuring the music of Tchaikovsky premiered in St Petersburg in Russia. The weather Bureau was established within the American Agricultural Department and the first railway ran in the Transvaal (the Randtram). Vincent van Gogh moved to Auvers-sur-Oise on the edge of Paris (under the care of Dr Paul Cachet) and he produced around 70 of his amazing works in ABOUT as many days. Although the date is ABSOLUTELY uncertain, it is thought that the first scientific excavation in the Holy Land is undertaken, with Flinders Petrie. In this expedition he discovered how ‘tells’ – archaeological sites – are formed and the Prussian Otto von Bismark resigns – an action with further reaching consequences than then seen. And…the Pronouncing Parallel Bible was published.

This edition dates from 1890 with a leather bound cover with very fine embossing work in an Art Deco style - and locks. Locks? A reminder that for thousands of years men lived and died in order to ensure we could have access to the Word of God and yet now, millions can’t be bothered to read it, or just choose to understand portions of it which suit their own measure of spirituality and doctrine.

This fine volume has woodblock illustrations, maps, name explanations and colour plates. A concordance, Bible stories for young people and 4000 questions and answers at the back of the Bible reside between the covers. It mentions a history relating to the artist Heinrich Johann Michael Ferdinand Hofmann, "being one of the oldest and best known Biblical artists now living. He was born in 1824..." and so you can read on - but how many of you have heard of this man who became professor in the academy of Dresden? Very, very few, if any I would imagine. But as for Jesus Christ who changed the world and his apostles who set the world alight, based on the promises to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob? They live on in the Book of Life, and works such as these give testimony to the only living book of all, the Bible.
